Some learning drivers need to practice more than others. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles recommends at least 30 hours of driving practice, with at least 10 hours in moderately heavy traffic. When you practice driving, ask your supervising driver to calmly let you know when you have made a driving mistake. Then try again correctly. Watch for mistakes other drivers make, and remind yourself not to make them too. Be sure to practice each driving maneuver described in the DMV Driver’s Manual. If you have questions about something you did, or should have done, during a practice session, check the DMV Driver’s Manual. The next time you practice driving, pay particular attention to correcting the problems you had experienced.Important: It is illegal to practice driving in a designated Road Test Area.
